Description:This road has been the town's main road since it was built in 1819-20. Before this time the main route from Biddulph to Congleton was via Smithy Lane, but by 1800 this was considered unsatisfactory. Road maintenance was a major problem and local businessmen and other influential people wanted a more direct route. A local landowning family, the Batemans, invested £2,000 in the new road, and a group of 165 trustees all put forward money. The road was not a very sound investment but it did reduce journey times and improve trade. Until 1866 the road had two toll houses along its length, one was near Fold Lane and the other near the Castle Inn.
In the latter part of the 19th century Robert Heath, owner of Biddulph Grange had the road diverted so that it linked up with the newly built Grange Road.
